THE AUGMENTED MUSEUM

DIGITAL RENAISSANCE, NEW
TECHNOLOGIES AND TOOLS FOR THE ENHANCEMENT AND DISSEMINATION OF
CULTURAL HERITAGE

The theme of technologies is now characterizing everything. It has also forcefully entered the world of cultural heritage, prefiguring a new way of visiting museums, archaeological sites, etc.
However, it is still something problematic because in the face of great innovations, they do not correspond to truly innovative uses.
In my thesis I tried to develop the theme of new technologies (from interactive surfaces to virtual reality; from holograms to immersive systems) applied to museum displays for their dissemination and enhancement.
I first analyzed the average visitor, the inclusion of possible technologies within the museum system, and the great chapter of "edutaintment".
After that I conducted an all-round research by physically visiting many museums and participating in conferences, experimenting firsthand and giving a critical opinion. I analyzed most of the technologies in use focusing mainly on augmented reality.
Later collaborating with the staff of Palazzo Madama, the civic museum of ancient art in Turin, I hypothesized a possible set-up inside the museum, designing the various rooms by implementing
or creating with different types of technologies.
